CHK Kosher has issued a kosher alert for a number of items that have been sold in the Marketplace in Crown Heights that have been incorrectly labeled as being under CHK certification.
Kosher alert text:
“Marketplace Product Department”
We regret to inform you that some items sold at the Market Place Produce department until last Thursday, March 30, have been erroneously labeled as being under CHK certification.
● Mushrooms used in stir fries etc. and labeled kosher for Passover:
We have been made aware of a potential Passover Kashrut issue with these mushrooms and as a precaution they should not be used. If you have already purchased these mixtures, remove the mushrooms, wash the rest of the elements before preparing. Any previously cooked food Before Pesach is allowed to eat, however, we recommend removing the mushrooms. If cooked during Passover food should be discarded and utensils (and the oven, if cooked uncovered) should be treated as non-kosher for Passover.
● Products containing products not certified for Passover garlic powder:
“Ready-to-Cook Garlic Potatoes” was mislabeled kosher for Passover. If purchased, wash potatoes well before cooking. If already cooked Before Passover, it can be eaten. If cooked during Passover, the food should be discarded and the utensils (and oven, if cooked uncovered) should be treated as non-kosher for Passover.
● corn on the cob And Bean sprouts labeled as kosher for Passover:
These are considered Kitnios and are only permitted for Passover for Sephardim. If you cooked them in a Passover pot, the pot is still kosher for Passover.
● Brussels sprouts, spring mix, green and red cabbage, triple-washed kale, washed and checked mixed cabbage, washed and checked coleslaw, endives, etc. (labeled kosher for Passover) or packaged under the CHK still needs to be washed and checked properly.
Note This Cut celery, dill, cilantro, parsley and romaine lettucehave been washed and checked under the CHK and are kosher for Passover if labeled.
● Diced red onions And Onions diced can only be used if you can smell a little salt on it.
The general Chabad custom is to peel all vegetables on Passover. All unpeeled vegetables must be peeled according to custom. Mixed squash noodles, green squash noodles and beet noodles can be checked for unpeeled parts which should be removed before using the rest.
Also, the general Chabad custom is not to use ginger on Passover.
We would like to thank Market Place management for working with the CHK to resolve these issues in the future.
We would like to remind the public that it is crucial to ensure that all food items are marked Kosher for Passover.
I wish you a kosher and happy Passover.
Rabbi Yosef Kirszenberg,
Director of Cacherou, CHK
